Greasers

Welcome!

Hey. You’ve joined the Greasers side. If you wanna be one of us, you have to know what we are and what we do. According to Dictionary.com, a greaser is "a swaggering young tough, especially a member of a street gang." Our subculture is based in the 1960's. We are characterized by our slicked-back hair held up with hair grease, which needs constant maintenance. Greasers would likely be seen with leather jackets and a cig. We are "tuff", sometimes poor , and often get in trouble with the law ( that doesn’t stop us ). We hate the Socs. Watch out for them and be careful. They never leave us alone. Always keep a switchblade on you.

Characters

Ponyboy

Ponyboy is the main character in the book “The Outsiders”. Everything has gone downhill for him ever since his parents died in a car accident. He is a 14 year-old boy who is the youngest of his brothers and his gang. The members of his gang are Steve, Sodapop, Darry, Johnny Cade, Dally Winston, and Two-Bit. Ponyboy has long brown-reddish hair, which everyone calls “tuff”. He plays track, has good grades, and has lots of friends. He has a nicotine addiction, which lots of people had back then. It is seen throughout the book that he wants a cigarette whenever he is stressed, worried, scared, etc. In the 1983 film, Ponyboy is played by C. Thomas Howell.

Sodapop Curtis

Sodapop is the middle child of the Curtis family. He dropped out to go work on cars at a gas station. He is 16 years old. He is said to have good charm, and is also very handsome. He’s so good-looking people describe him as having “movie star looks”. He has dark golden hair and brown eyes. He is also known to be easygoing, understanding, optimistic, and easy to talk to. Soda is dating Sandy. Soda also used to work with horses, and grew fond of a horse named Mickey Mouse. In the 1983 film, he is played by Rob Lowe.

Darry Curtis

Darry Curtis is the oldest Curtis brother. He is 20 years old. He was originally meant to go to college, but his parent’s death stopped that. He dropped all athletics and education to go get two jobs to take care of his other two brothers. He is strict and tough, but also loving and protective of his brothers. He is also a very talented football player. He has blue eyes and blonde hair that he keeps short, unlike other greasers. In fact, if his parents did not die, it is said in the book that he would have become a Soc, but not in the “born into it” way. He would have earned it. He often fights with Ponyboy, which makes his younger brother think that he doesn’t love him. In the 1983 film, Darry is played by Patrick Swayze.

Johnny Cade

Johnny Cade is one of Ponyboy’s best friends. He is sixteen years old. He is known for being quiet and sensitive. His dad is an alcoholic and abuses him. His mother doesn’t care about what he does and ignores him. This behavior towards Johnny leads him to see the gang as a family. Alongside the abuse, Johnny had been jumped by a bunch of Socs in a parking lot, which led to his PTSD. Johnny is best friends with Dally Winston and Ponyboy. Johnny has black hair, dark eyes, and is skinny. Despite his rough exterior, Johnny is caring and loving towards others. One night in a parking lot with Ponyboy, Johnny kills Robert Sheldon out of self-defense. Johnny died in the hospital near the end of the book, with the last words “Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold.” In the 1983 film, Johnny is played by Ralph Macchio.
